The agent-first philosophy
“Agent-first” is a design stance, not a buzzword. It means we start from the question what should this system be able to decide and do on its own? — then engineer backwards: the knowledge it needs (RAG, ontologies), the tools it may use (APIs, EDI, HL7/FHIR, ERP), the checkpoints where humans stay in charge, and the guardrails and audit that make autonomy safe. Automation executes scripts. Agents pursue goals. The difference compounds.
